Sleep Now, Party Later: Tips for Getting in Some Extra Zzzz’s

My husband and I both need nine hours of sleep a night. But, let’s be real – that doesn’t happen. Well, except for those magical nights spent in a hotel with big fluffy pillows. You know what I’m talking about? Pure bliss.

On average, I get around seven hours a sleep a night, and by Friday – I’m wiped. Between work and adult responsibilities (#adulting), my workout time gets pushed to the 6:00 am time slot. And while I feel like a million bucks post-workout, waking up for that early sweat sesh can be a struggle. But, the truth is – sleep is critical to your fitness routine. It is not possible to reach your fitness goals if your body isn’t allowed the proper time to rest.

According to a 2011 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25% of Americans report not getting enough sleep. Wow! So, what happens when you DON’T get enough sleep?

How much sleep do you need?

This answer is tricky because it depends on so many factors. Some people need more sleep than others – metabolism, activity level, age, and other factors are all at play. The more physical activity you do, the more the muscles and nervous system break down through stress on the body. The rebuilding happens while you sleep. So, the more you do, the more time you need to rebuild those systems!

Moisture-Wicking Sheets

Ok, this may seem odd. But, I wake up sweaty a lot. I can never seem to get the temperature in our house right. These performance sheets from Sheex are made from an athletic fabric. No more sweaty sheets! And if you join their email list, you receive 15% off your first order 🙂

Sheex also makes pajamas too! The performance sleepwear uses the same technology in it’s fabric as the sheets. No more sweaty mess!

Blackout Curtains

My five-year-old self would run in fear, but nowadays I can only sleep in the pitch black. These blackout curtains  reflect light to prevent it from entering the room, and they prevent heat from escaping. Good thing I have those moisture-wicking sheets too 😉

Not a sleep in the darkness kind of gal? The creative LED back-lit cube from Light Box Arts is my version of a night light 🙂 Perfect for kiddos too! Light Box Arts has hundreds of unique designs to fit your space, or you can personalize your own piece.

PediPocket

Now that I have comfortable sheets, I also need a cozy blanket 🙂 I love the PediPocket! The blanket includes a 20” pocket for your feet and calves, keeping you warm and toasty on those frigid San Diego winter nights 🙂 But seriously – my feet are always cold! It’s soft and made from velvety fleece.

Bluetooth Sleep Sound Therapy System

Sound Oasis is truly fabulous. The compact sound machine is small, so it doesn’t take up too much space on our nightstand or in your suitcase. My husband took it on a recent business trip – perfect to drown out a loud hotel neighbor.
